An outdoor kitchen on gas or electricity?

An outdoor kitchen on gas or electricity?

When the days get longer and the weather warmer, it's wonderful to move your life outdoors. Reading a book in the sun, drinks with friends and, of course, eating outside. With an outdoor kitchen you can not only eat outside, you can cook outside too. That way you stay in touch with your guests while you create your culinary masterpieces.

What's more, cooking outside means no more unpleasant smells in the house. And of course, a kitchen is simply a lovely thing to have, too. There are outdoor kitchens where you cook on gas and outdoor kitchens that run on electricity. But which is actually better, gas or electricity?

An electric outdoor kitchen

With an electric outdoor kitchen you cook on an electric hob or barbecue. The advantage is that you don't burn any fuel, so you get less smoke. That's nice for you but also for the neighbours, especially if you only have a small garden or a balcony.

What's more, an electric outdoor kitchen heats up quickly and cools down quickly too. So once you've finished cooking, the kitchen is soon safe to be around again. An electric hob is also easier to clean. If you wipe it with a cloth straight after cooking, it's clean.

Do make sure you use the right cleaning product. The disadvantage is that you obviously need power. So you need a socket nearby, or to have one installed. An extension cable is also possible, but that isn't as safe. Besides, there's no fire while you cook, so you don't get that delicious smoky flavour in your food that makes barbecuing so tasty.

An outdoor kitchen on gas

Most outdoor kitchens run on gas. The main advantage of a gas outdoor kitchen is that you can simply put the gas bottle in one of the kitchen cabinets and connect it to your cooker or grill. So you can place the outdoor kitchen anywhere you like, because you're not dependent on a socket or any other connection.

You can even design a gas outdoor kitchen so that it can be moved. You do, of course, have to replace the gas bottle when it's empty. Gas takes longer to heat up and produces more smoke. That does give your food that delicious smoky flavour, though, because you're cooking over a real flame.

Grilled meat or grilled vegetables have a wonderful flavour of their own that you really don't want to miss when cooking outdoors. Gas also gives you more options and makes it easier to control the temperature. The true barbecue fan will appreciate a gas outdoor kitchen more.

Gas or electricity?

Both types of outdoor kitchen have their pros and cons. If you don't have a power connection near the spot where you want to put the outdoor kitchen, you'd be better off choosing gas. Then you don't have to mess about with an extension cable or have a socket installed.

If there is a socket nearby, an electric outdoor kitchen is also a good choice. And if you want to put a small fridge in the outdoor kitchen, you could go electric, since you'll want to run electricity out for the fridge anyway. An electric outdoor kitchen is also the best choice if your neighbours live close by.

That's because you create less smoke, so your neighbours won't be bothered by your kitchen. If your neighbours live a bit further away or don't mind smoke drifting over, a gas outdoor kitchen gives you the full barbecue experience with smoke and flames. And you'll taste that in your dishes.
