Spring has arrived again, which means you'll soon be spending sunny days in your garden once more. From days of gardening and discovering new plants to drinking cocktails and enjoying delicious food in the evening sun.
Getting your garden ready for spring
Before you can start enjoying the sun and your garden, your garden of course needs to shed its winter coat and be made completely spring-proof. That means tidying up, finally finishing those projects and giving your lawn a healthy green colour again.
We understand that sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees (sometimes literally), so we're giving you 5 handy tips to get your garden ready for spring. You can read them in the article below.
Tip 1: Remove green algae and make your patio look like new again
In autumn and winter there are often lots of leaves in your garden and on your patio tiles too. This is a breeding ground for green algae, and before you know it your patio is as green as the local football pitch. That's obviously not what you want, but fortunately there are several solutions.
There are several ways to make your patio look like new again. Think of scrubbing with water, soap or sand (for the stubborn stains). Be careful with tiles that have a top coating if you're planning to use sand. A pressure washer usually works well too for removing loose growth. That saves scrubbing with the broom.
You could also use a green algae cleaner, which is available in various types and sizes. Do read the instructions carefully, though, because not every product works the same way.
Tip 2: Get a beautiful outdoor kitchen
Nothing is as relaxing as a long, leisurely meal after a sunny day in spring or summer. An outdoor kitchen is ideal to have in your garden for this. It means whoever is cooking stays involved with the company at the table, and it creates a wonderfully sociable atmosphere.
There are several types of outdoor kitchen, each with different conveniences. At buitenkeukendeal.be, for example, we offer outdoor kitchens with a fridge and sink or outdoor kitchens with a BBQ, and from those you can then choose between a Kamado, a Green Egg or even a gas hob.
There's a huge number of different combinations, and it's even possible to have your outdoor kitchen made to measure with all the conveniences you want, plus a choice of different materials. The possibilities are endless and there's always an outdoor kitchen that suits your wishes, garden and budget.
Tip 3: Spread fresh soil over your garden
Giving your garden new, fresh soil not only gives it a fresh look, but also provides your garden with new nutrients. This is great for all the flowers and plants in your garden, as they can carry on growing undisturbed.
Normally, plants get their nutrients from the fallen leaves or dead plants around them, but in most gardens that isn't the case. That's because people like to keep their garden tidy and put dead plants and fallen leaves in the green waste bin.
So it certainly does no harm to give your plants a bit of help and feed them at the start of spring. That way they'll last all spring and they're more likely to survive the next winter too.
Tip 4: Prune your plants and shrubs
By maintaining and pruning your plants and shrubs properly, you create enough space and sunlight for every plant to grow. Pruning them well also makes your plants and shrubs last longer and grow more healthily.
Before you take the secateurs to your plants, though, do a bit of research into your shrubs. Some plants are frost-sensitive and need to be pruned at a particular time of year.
Tip 5: Clear your garden of weeds
Weeding is something everyone who loves gardening would rather not do or keeps putting off. That's why it's our last tip, and we'll keep it short.
Still, it's necessary to keep space free for your plants. And of course it simply looks very fresh and tidy too. An annoying little job, then, but certainly not an unnecessary one. Your flowers, plants and shrubs will definitely appreciate it.
